Martha Garland is a Textile Designer/ Maker who is well known for her fearless use of colour, and her characterful expression of imagery and narratives.
Based in London, Martha studied at Chelsea College of Art and at Central St Martins, where she specialised in textile design. She is a skilled craftswoman, whose gypsy ancestry and alternative education have directed her will to preserve, promote and modernise traditional and rural craft - through her own work and concepts, and through teaching.
Growing up in the New Forest, her introduction to the arts began with her Steiner education, a unique environment that natured and awakened a natural interaction with traditional hand crafts. This early introduction led to an instinctive familiarisation with the processes that now define her work.
Martha works in an experimental yet process driven manner, combining modern concepts with folk techniques, through an array of colour, composition and material exploration.
